Chris Fowles’ Latest Spot for Scottish Gov Utilizes Virtual Production and Emotive Performance To Outline Just How Easily Tragedy Can Occur On the Road

Chris Fowles kept it simple and effective, using a single evolving shot paired with state of the art virtual production for the Scottish Government’s new speeding campaign.

Chris had this to say about the project: “It was a real mix of technical challenges and raw emotion. At its core, it’s all about the actor’s performance — that moment right before the crash where everything just freezes.

As a director, those are the moments you look for, where the emotion carries the whole scene.

We shot this using virtual production, which was tricky with the tight budget we had. Especially with speed changes and motion control. There were plenty of times where the whole team worked through the night together to figure things out.

But what made this film special to me was the purpose behind it. It’s a cause I genuinely care about, which made the hard work worth it.

Speeding, especially in the leadup to Christmas, is something that affects so many lives, and getting the chance to create something that could make a difference was incredible.”

Visionaries Director Jeremy Haccoun Creates An Incredible Spec Inspired by Lincoln Using State Of The Art AI Technology

Visionaries director Jeremy Haccoun unveils a mesmerising spec spot for Lincoln, showcasing the breathtaking potential of AI-generated video. Leveraging the recently released Gen-3 text-to-video model from Runway, Jeremy crafts stunning, hyper-realistic visuals by describing his shots as he would to his crew. For example, one prompt that could generate similar shots reads:

"A high angle view of a magnificent desert ground: the sand swells, then a buried 'Black Lincoln Aviator Luxury SUV' slowly emerges from beneath the sand, causing a beautiful chaos of sand. Then all this sand heavily streams down the bodywork. Camera movement: start high angle then descend to a low-angle shot, angled up at the SUV glorious at the top of a dune, with sand streaming down the SUV. Slow motion, magic hour, backlit, flares, drifting dust, superb cinematic lighting."

Jeremy was impressed by Runway’s capabilities and meticulously refined the action, camera movement, and lighting through multiple video generations. As AI-driven content proliferates, he was eager to infuse the result with directorial intention close to that of a traditional shoot, while achieving a visual polish so impeccable you’d never guess it was AI-generated.

He then applied his post-production expertise to complete the project single-handedly: editing, compositing the Lincoln logos onto the car, adding a few more sand elements (also generated with Runway), color grading, and upscaling. The project in total took about two weeks to complete—an astonishing turnaround given the high-end finish.

At the Visionaries, we are always keen to find the best creative solutions for brands, and our directors constantly look to the future. In this instance, Jeremy demonstrates that AI, when used as a tool to enhance human creativity, becomes a powerful visual weapon capable of executing an ambitious brief from the comfort of one’s computer.

This is a spec ad not affiliated with the Lincoln brand, celebrating their iconic designs.

Adu Lalouschek Takes us on a Culture Filled Journey in his latest spot for Tui 🌎

From riding scenic trains and road-tripping through breathtaking landscapes, to candle-lit sketching sessions and vibrant plant-picking, Adu leaves you yearning for a trip around the globe.

We get up close with elephants for some amazing photos, and dive into bustling markets for a unique shopping experience. Every moment is captured from that quintessential Tui experience – join us for the fun!

Adu had this to say about the project: Directing the new TUI spot in Sri Lanka was a dream. We wanted to reach younger travellers for the new TUI tours, so I pushed the visuals into a modern and playful space. We couldn't have asked for a better location to shoot in than Sri Lanka, it offers such a rich canvas and culture. While shoots like this come with a lot of variables and long hours stuck traveling in vans, the agency and client were amazing. Everything just clicked and I couldn't be happier with how it all came together.

Mateo Willis Brings Us Omnivore, Now Streaming On Apple TV+

Visionaries Director Mateo Willis brings us something very special this month — Omnivore, a new series on Apple TV.

Narrated by renowned chef René Redzepi, the series explores how food shapes and connects the world. From salt flats in Peru to coffee forests in Rwanda, to wild tuna off the coast of Spain, each episode of ‘Omnivore’ celebrates the way we grow, transform and consume the world’s best resources — the ones we eat.

To tell these stories, Omnivore crisscrossed the globe, bringing you to the places the ingredients originate from and showcasing each destination’s natural beauty.

Mateo, who worked as Exec Producer on the show & directed the 2nd episode (‘Tuna’), had this to say about working on the project : “The scale of Omnivore gave me, as an EP and Director, real scope to peak into some of the most fascinating corners of humanity - from salt workers in Peru to the most exclusive sushi restaurants in Japan. To do each story justice meant finding the right narratives tools, and then pushing them to their limits. Food is never just food”

Mixed Media For Mentos: Chris Bristow Takes Us Throw A Fruity Tunnel Of Taste

Chris Bristow's latest spot for Mentos leads viewers through an enchanting fruit tunnel, blending incredible mixed media with some serious summer colors.

Chris had this to say about the film: “I wanted to keep the worlds graphic and interesting. It was important to not go with my first instinct and create castles and dragons out of pineapples or something - I wanted to travel to lots of different fruits in 15 seconds, so it needed to stay graphic. So I looked towards a more motion graphics approach to the VFX. The costumes needed to be silly and cool - like the best festival outfits mixed with a high fashion energy. To shoot it required a lot of pre-viz, so I pretty much jumped straight on that as my main port of call, and composed a temp track to get a sense of where I wanted transitions and an overall sense of pace. This was super important for the crew on a blue screen shoot, so we’re all on the same page and I’m not just holding it all in my head!”

Gerald McMorrow's Latest Short Film ‘Embers’ Questions The Value of Wisdom

During the pandemic, Gerald McMorrow won the blessing from Douglas Adams’ estate to option Douglas’ version of The Sibylline Books, ‘Sifting The Embers’ – his epilogue from the wonderful book ‘Last Chance To See’ and turn it into a short film.

In a flourishing ancient city, a mysterious woman arrives and offers to sell twelve large books containing all the knowledge and wisdom in the world for a single sack of gold. When the kings’ people refuse, she burns half of the books and departs. After a harsh winter, she returns and offers the remaining six books for two sacks of gold. Finding the increased price outrageous, they refuse, and she burns half of the books again before leaving. The following winter brings famine and disease, and the people again refuse to pay four sacks of gold for three books. She burns two more and leaves. On her final visit, they finally pay 16 sacks of gold for just one book...

Gerald recalls “I first read ‘Last Chance To See’ when I was in my twenties, (an already avid Douglas fan) and have reread it endlessly. As we find the planet in the state that it is in, the fable seems all the more pertinent; not just gradual animal extinction and climate change, but the general sense of mass stupidity in all aspects of how we treat the world and each other.

We shot ‘Embers’ in Marrakech with a small budget and the good will of many actors and technicians. I hope the story is as resonant to you as it was to me when I read it all those years ago.:

Film coming soon…

Visionaries Director Henry Dean Cleverly Illustrates The Impact Of Politics On Daily British Life In His Latest Film For The Times

Visionaries Director Henry Dean's latest campaign promoting The Times' coverage of the upcoming UK General Election highlights the pervasive impact of politics on everyday life by integrating Westminster-related objects and symbols into typical British scenes.

Director Henry Dean had this to say about working on the project: “As with anything topical, one of our main challenges was a tight timeframe. We knew an election was brewing, but didn’t know when it would be called. Either way, we had to get the campaign ready so it could be launched at a moment’s notice, and have as much of a shelf-life as possible.

I was determined to make something that stood out in the political/news landscape by feeling considered and refined. In a world of iPhone soundbites and screenshotted tweets, giving this campaign a premium look and relaxed pacing was key in making something that would give audiences a moment to pause and think.

While the scenes themselves are relatively simple, the scope of the spot was quite ambitious considering all the locations, props and moving parts involved. Our legendary location manager Duncan Woods was one of my closest collaborators from the start. Logistics mattered just as much as the look on this one, and he was able to help bring the vision to life in a way that still worked across a jam-packed two day shoot.

As a director, I like to hunt for projects that will stand out. A main facet of my work is making the everyday feel spectacular, and making the extraordinary feel accessible. As soon as I read this script, I knew that this spot did both of those things. Politics is an arena where everything can so easily get torn apart, where hope can quickly evaporate from one week to the next. I wanted to use this campaign as a chance to make something that lingered, feeling fun and fresh while still conveying the subject’s importance. Overall, it’s a campaign that feels very ‘me’ and I am proud to have directed it at what feels like a crucial time in British politics. I can’t thank the team at Pulse enough for trusting me with their vision.”

Human-animal relationships weave their way through the majority of Mateo's work, a reflection of his semi-wild childhood in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

He's poured heart and soul into many landmark series, including Planet Earth 2, Blue Planet 2 , Our Planet, Dynasties, Life Story and Frozen Planet, and made highly acclaimed films for National Geographic and Netflix.

His incredible talent for guiding human interactions with the natural world also shines through in his commercial work. Mateo has produced charming work for the likes of Battersea Dogs & Cats, Frontline Plus, Petzl, as well as for musicians like James Blake.

As executive producer and director, he's most recently been a part of Omnivore. This premium doc series explores human culture through the lens of food, and is steered by the creative vision of Cary Fukunaga, director of Bond - No Time to Die, and Rene Redzepi, of Noma fame. Currently, he's writing a fictional feature based on a woman's search for a whale, for Brouhaha Entertainment, and has just finished directing a film for Apple TV on our troubled relationship with tuna.

Davide Cantelmo, lead Directors’ Agent at The Visionaries, has this to say about the signing: “Meeting the person behind your favourite piece of entertainment is rare. It's even rarer to find that they are not only skilled filmmakers but also exceptional individuals. This was my experience with Mateo Willis, a driven creative talent and seasoned storyteller who has transformed the way we narrate animals' lives. From pioneering new technologies to capture elusive subjects, to his commitment to presenting the stark impact humans have on our planet, Mateo stands out in the world of nature documentaries. Representing him commercially is a great honour, and I see a bright future for him and The Visionaries.”

Luke Logan Crafts a Mesmerizing Cinematic Experience for McLaren Automotive

Visionaries’ director Luke Logan melds the nostalgic beauty of 35mm with cutting-edge virtual production tools to create a stunning new film for McLaren.

Luke had this to say about the film: “Shooting on 35mm film, with anamorphic glass, motion control and virtual production, my biggest focus with this project has been maintaining a human and delicate edge amongst the inevitable technical challenges. I think this combination is a world first, and I'm glad we could prove that the latest tech doesn't distance us from a visceral viewing experience, in fact it can facilitate it and open up new possibilities”.

Paul Mortlock, DP, elaborates: “We wanted to do everything in camera. Working within VP helped us to do that, It made capturing something extraordinary very easy. 35mm was the natural choice for this experimental film. I chose 200T for the VP scenes and daylight exterior (corrected) & 500T for night exterior.”

Additionally, here are a few words from Nathan at Pathway XR, the Virtual Production studio: “Pathway is keenly interested in experimenting with non-traditional ways of working, and this project was a great opportunity to do just that. From a VP Supervision perspective, our vision was to shoot real-time on celluloid, which presented technical challenges but overall added an organic feel to the film that would have been hard to achieve digitally in post. We also used the benefits of VP to shoot sequences more safely than on location and we also experimented with video plates mapped to 3D geometry.”
