Ben Holman takes us deep into Complexo do Alemão, one of Rio’s most deprived favelas. The man behind the Abraco Campeao project, Alan Duarte, has experienced this way of life first hand, losing nine members of his family to violence associated with drug trafficking. The raw film, which won its category at Tribeca, brings us Alan’s inspirational story.
Ben's relationship with Alan began 12 years ago when he moved to Rio as a filmmaker and a keen amateur boxer. He became involved with projects such as NGO 'Fight for Peace' - a project that combines martial arts with education for young adults affected by crime and violence - and found a home in the hearts of the people. He met Alan at the same boxing gym and was inspired by his story as he managed to find a different path to many of his peers.
Still inspired by Alan, the art of boxing, and the people of Brazil, The Good Fight is born. Of the many powerful scenes of violence and poverty, one is truly heart-breaking. Alan’s older brother is killed. A victim of the gun violence that plagues Alemão.
But even amidst such tragic scenes, the spirit of the people of Brazil shines through. With its classes and personal development sessions, Alan’s boxing club is helping the young people of Alemão uncover their worth.
A symbol of hope and a pillar for the people, it’s a reminder that life is indeed a fight, but one that should be fought together!
